The ’90s were deeply weird. Globally, the Soviet Union collapsed, leaving hundreds of millions in economic chaos and confusion as the Cold War’s framework faded. Locally, one could listen to Folk Implosion’s “Natural One” while watching NASCAR with their father. John Davis and Lou Barlow recorded Dare to Be Surprised amid this turmoil. They met Wally Gagel while at Fort Apache, where his enthusiasm for new wave matched theirs. Their collaboration marked a departure from earlier Folk Implosion sounds. With Barlow’s indie rock background and Davis’s unique lyrics, they aimed for a playful creation. What emerged was different: moody and experimental, even sampling Erik Satie. Lacking funds for a larger studio, they followed rules: no chords, no strumming, no indie rock. Their process involved writing lyrics in the park over episodic sessions, ultimately resulting in an album. When “Natural One” gained popularity, they chose to maintain their original plan rather than chase major-label support. It’s regrettable that Dare to Be Surprised remained overshadowed by the KIDS soundtrack, but it now embodies a band discovering their unique sound amid the chaotic ’90s.

Keep away from the sun.

Never place it next to a Justin Bieber record.

Treat it like your grandma, you know if she was a record. Know what I mean? Tender care, don't talk back, and never interupt during Murder She Wrote. Wait - what the hell was I writing about-
