Camera Obscura's latest album, Look to the East, Look to the West, is a revelation. Tracyanne Campbell-led outfit reunited with producer Jari Haapalainen and crafted an album that combines the best of their earlier works with a more sophisticated sound. The album is big, a widescreen reframing of Camera Obscura's sound that goes back to basics and drops the veil of reverb that characterized their previous albums. The tinges of country and soul are more apparent than ever, and Campbell's voice reflects on love, loss, and the passage of time. The penultimate track, "Sugar Almond," is dedicated to Carey Lander.
