Jimmy LaValle, recognized for his work in the contemplative dream-rock band Tristeza and San Diego’s The Black Heart Procession, began releasing intricate, progressive instrumental music as The Album Leaf in 1999 (the name derives from a Chopin composition). After years of extensive touring and refining complex tracks in his small home studio, LaValle was given a rare opportunity by Icelandic legends Sigur Ros and Mum to record his latest solo masterpiece at their Mosfellsbaer studio. He eventually accepted and traveled overseas to compose and record “In A Safe Place.” Featuring vocals (absent from previous Album Leaf releases) from The Black Heart Procession’s Pall Jenkins, Sigur Ros’ Jon Thor Birgisson, and LaValle himself, the songs on the new album are hauntingly delicate and more pop-oriented than ever before. “In A Safe Place” expertly weaves together elements of minimal electronica and neo-instrumental rock.
