The debut album from Primus, Suck on This, was a strategic and clever decision by the band to showcase their live energy and unique fusion of art, prog rock, and funk. Recorded at a live show, it not only captures the band's undeniable talent, but also the enthusiastic reception of their devoted fan base. While some of the songs ended up on their studio album Frizzle Fry the following year, many fans consider Suck on This to be the superior release. The band's performance is top-notch, with their dynamic riffing and Funkadelic-meets-Rush rhythms shining through in the crisp recording. The only downside is that in a few songs, Les Claypool's quirky vocals are a bit muffled or strained. Regardless, his eccentricity adds to the charm, especially in the raucous "Tommy the Cat," which later appeared on their hit album Sailing the Seas of Cheese.
