Amen Dunes, known for his outsider approach, realized that he needed to become an outsider to his own musical history as he approached his seventh album in fall 2019. He was tired of the music he had been limiting himself to and wanted to start anew. Instead of embarking on the familiar, he decided to start from scratch, immersing himself in the fundamentals of both piano and electronic music, which he grew up with at raves and clubs but never imagined himself capable of making. The lasting impact of these musical influences on his work became clear with his latest album, Death Jokes. This album also marks a shift in thematic focus, with Damon directly critiquing the glorification of violence, coercion, and groupthink in American culture through samples and lyrics.
