Slint was a band that was formed in the 1980s. They made two albums that were both intense and beautiful. Their second album, Spiderland, was produced by Brian Paulson and was the first to be released by Touch and Go in 1991. It consisted of six songs that created an evocative new sound, which was taut, menacing, and haunting, with occasional blasts of unleashed rage. The album cover featured an eerie black and white photo of four band members' heads above water, which was taken by Will Oldham. PJ Harvey responded to it on the back cover. The album became very popular and gained wider audience attention with the song "Good Morning, Captain" that was featured in the 1995 film Kids. In 2010, the 33 1/3 series honored the album. Although the band split prior to the release of Spiderland, its members went on to play in various other bands such as Tortoise, the Breeders, Palace, The For Carnation, Papa M, Evergreen, Interpol, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The album was recorded by Brian Paulson at River North Recorders in Chicago and was released by Touch and Go Records in April of 1991. The six songs on Spiderland methodically mapped a shadowy new continent of sound. The music was taut, menacing, and haunting, and its structure was built largely on absence and restraint, on the echoing space between the notes, but punctuated by sudden thrilling blasts of unfettered fury. The eerie black and white photo of the four band members’ heads breaking the surface of the water is an iconic album cover.
