This album captures the essence of Vampire Weekend's birthplace, New York City, while being recorded in various locations worldwide, including New York, Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo. Produced by Ezra Koenig and long-time collaborator Ariel Rechtshaid, Only God Was Above Us features a powerful title inspired by a photo taken by Steven Siegel in a New Jersey subway graveyard in 1988. With universal themes of questioning our world and seeking acceptance for peace, this album is both direct and complex, showcasing the band's signature blend of beauty and grittiness.
