Trevor Jones' music for this captivating and ambitious Jim Henson/George Lucas production is a masterful blend of synthesizers and orchestral ensembles, creating an otherworldly atmosphere that perfectly complements David Bowie's mesmerizing performance as the Goblin King. As he sings the haunting "Within You" while pursuing the film's heroine, the music transports the listener to a fantastical realm. However, a few sporadic instances of raucous pop songs by the Goblin King and his minions disrupt the overall tone, detracting from the impact of the score. While Bowie's "Underground" is a standout track, others like "Magic Dance" fall short. A curious mix indeed.
