 The Byrds were not unfamiliar with country music as they had incorporated it into their second album. However, with Sweetheart, they delved deeper into the classic country sound and emotions, without any hint of mockery or arrogance. This was a bold move at a time when most rock enthusiasts considered country music to be nothing more than a "L'il Abner" caricature. The Byrds, on the other hand, asserted that country and western could be trendy, chic, and full of genuine feeling.
