When Galaxie 500's Today dropped in 1988, it unleashed a series of hushed explosions that still reverberate to this day. The record boldly redefined what rock music could be, merging stray bridges into immersive songs. Its legacy lives on through the many bands they influenced, like Low, Belle & Sebastian, and Bon Iver.Today is hauntingly unique. The trio of Damon Krukowski, Dean Wareham, and Naomi Yang dispensed with rock music's usual theatrics, instead focusing on genuine emotion. Produced by Mark Kramer (of Bongwater, Ween, and King Missle fame), and hailing from Boston (a city in thrall to the Pixies' jagged electricity), Today flourished.More than two decades later, the title remains true. The music, recorded with then-unconventional reverb, is timeless. Classics like "Flowers," "Temperature's Rising," and "Tugboat" remain as vibrant as ever.
