The Blue Nile's first album has an intriguing backstory. A local Scottish trio, the Blue Nile, was recruited by Linn Electronics to showcase their new recording console's capabilities. The resulting song, "A Walk Across the Rooftops," was a unique mix of various instruments and vocals, highlighting the equipment's clarity and range. Linn was so impressed that they launched a record label and funded the production of the full album. A Walk Across the Rooftops features seven lengthy tracks, all following the same style as the opener. Lead singer Paul Buchanan's velvety voice takes center stage in symphonic arrangements that are both lush and stark. The slow tempos and creative use of silences make for a mesmerizing listening experience. While this album was originally popular for its demonstration of the lack of background noise on compact discs, it truly shines as a musical masterpiece.
