 What does OBI mean?

The term "OBI" (帯), used for the paper strip on Japanese records and other products, originates from the Japanese word for "sash" or "belt," traditionally worn with kimono or other Japanese dress. In a traditional Japanese context, an obi is a broad sash that wraps around the waist and is tied at the back. It is an essential part of traditional Japanese attire and comes in various styles, colors, and materials.

An OBI strip is a paper strip, typically found wrapped around the spine of Japanese vinyl records, CDs, books, or other products. In the context of Japanese vinyl records, these OBI strips are particularly notable and collectible. They serve several purposes:

  1. Identification and Information: OBI strips provide information about the record such as the title, artist, track list, price, catalog number, and sometimes a brief description or promotional material. This is particularly useful since many Japanese releases contain text predominantly in Japanese. For international collectors, these strips can be essential for understanding the content of the record.

  2. Marketing and Promotion: The OBI strip often contains marketing information, like advertisements for other albums by the artist or on the same label. It might also include information about awards, chart positions, or special features of the album.

  3. Aesthetic Appeal: For collectors, the OBI strip adds to the aesthetic appeal of the record. Many collectors value the OBI strip for its visual appeal and its role in completing the original packaging.

  4. Collectibility and Value: In the collector's market, a Japanese vinyl record with its original OBI strip often holds more value than one without it. The strip indicates that the item is complete and has been well-maintained.

The presence of an OBI strip can significantly affect the collectibility and resale value of Japanese vinyl records. Collectors often seek out these items specifically for the unique design and additional information provided by the OBI strip.

If the artist normally sings in english, will the Japanese Vintage Vinyl be in english or Japanese language?

Rest assured, Bob Dylan and Sting could not learn Japanese to record new versions. These are the same exact versions used on the english releases. The Japanese Vintage Vinyl versions are more likely to be produced from better source files and on better quality vinyl.

How is Japanese Vintage Vinyl Graded?

Japanese Imports IndieVinylDen.com uses the following grading system for our Used Japanese Import Vinyl.

We only carry vinyl that receives a grade of at least Very Good Plus (VG+) and includes the original OBI Strip with the record. We grade the media, cover, and OBI Strip. Most items we carry will fall into the Very Good Plus (VG+) grading. Grading is subjective; it's like arguing how blue the sky is or if your own farts smell. Because of this, we have a 30-day policy for returns after you have a chance to inspect and play your records. Just reach out if you would like to return; please don't if you want to argue the difference between grades.

The grading standard is as follows:

Like New (M-) M- is the grade given for a completely new, unplayed record. This grade is generally given to items in factory-sealed/new condition but acquired second-hand. We rarely use this grading.

Excellent (EX) EX is the grade for a record that is close to perfect condition. This grade generally describes an item that may have been played/handled several times but is close to new condition. There are virtually no signs of handling on the cover/obi and no visible defects. The Excellent rating is the highest grading generally given to second-hand items. Please check the listing for available accessories and item photos. If there are issues of note, they will be described in the listing. For example: "Jacket corner bend," retail price tag, cutout, writing, sticker, etc.

Very Good Plus (VG+) A second-hand item that has been carefully handled. Defects are naturally formed during handling, and there is no problem related to playback. Disc: There may be rubbing when taking out the record, marks on the surface, minor scratches, slight stains, warpage, etc., but it does not affect playback beyond minimal surface noise. Label: Spindle rubbing, thin circular marks (ring wear) may be seen but are not readily noticeable. Cover: Light signs of handling, bent corners, small tears at the jacket joints, etc.

How we ship your vinyl purchase: After the initial inspection, we remove the vinyl record from the liners it arrived in, professionally clean it, and place it in a new liner for shipping; this allows no further damage to the original liner or covers during transport.
